Enshi Grand Canyon: A 5A National Scenic Area and Geological Park

Enshi Grand Canyon, a national 5A scenic spot and national geological park, is a world-renowned ‘fissure-sinkhole-pillar group’ coexisting compound karst landform ‘natural museum’. Its ecological environment is uniquely endowed, with pristine and rustic natural scenery, including a ten-thousand-meter cliff gallery, thousand-foot waterfalls, hundreds of solitary peaks, and a ten-mile deep ravine. Yunlong Fissure is known as ‘the beautiful scar of the Earth’; ‘One Incense Stick’ has been rated as one of the 40 famous scenic spots in China by foreign media.
Yunlong Fissure Scenic Area, covering an area of 11.3 square kilometers with an altitude of 600-800 meters, features main geomorphological landscapes such as fissures, waterfalls, deep pools, caves, underground rivers, shaped stones, and geological profiles. Yunlong Fissure, shaped like the character ‘zhi’ in plan view, stretches nearly north-south, with a total length of 3.6 kilometers, an average depth of 75 meters, and an average width of 15 meters. It is known as the ‘ten-mile hundred-zhang cliff’ and is the main sightseeing area of the Yunlong Fissure Scenic Area. The two walls of Yunlong Fissure are steep and nearly parallel, with consistent width from top to bottom, and a cross-section in the shape of a ‘U’, which is extremely rare and has scarcity and uniqueness.

One Incense Stick Karst Pillar. One Incense Stick is a landmark of Enshi Grand Canyon and a very rare landscape among similar karst landforms. Standing at 150 meters tall with a base diameter of 6 meters and a minimum diameter of only 4 meters, it is composed of Triassic limestone. Due to the horizontal bedding of the strata here and the high compressive strength of the rock (800 kg/cm³), without any inclination or sliding, it remains unmoved by wind and rain, standing among the peaks for millions of years, guarding this mysterious land, which is indeed rare.

Cliff Walkway, also known as Bu Yun Tian Zan or Cliff Long Gallery, was originally built in August 2006 and took one year and eight months to complete. The walkway is located on the east side of the mountain’s vertical cliff, at an altitude of over 1700 meters, with a total length of 488 meters, a height difference of 300 meters, and 118 stone steps, blending with the cliff. Because it is built on the cliff, it is also called the Cliff Long Gallery or ‘Cliff Walkway’. This project is a combination of ancient Bashu plank road manufacturing technology and modern reinforced concrete building materials, advanced construction techniques, scientific, safe, and grand.

Greeting Pine, estimated to be nearly a thousand years old, grows proudly on the cliff, as if embracing and welcoming tourists from around the world.
